What's cooking in the MoJoSkillet? Down Home Music! Music you might hear
floating from a jukebox in some all night diner, served up fast, hot and
greasy. Comfort food for a wounded soul. It's the kind of music once found
in almost any barroom, honky-tonk, or dance-hall out on the two-lane
highways that crisscrossed this country. Gram Parsons called it "Cosmic
American Music". As was once said about the music of Sister Rose Maddox,
it's "Three chords and the Truth".
The main ingredient in the MoJoSkillet is roots rock and rhythm'n'blues,
served up with a generous helping of hard-core country & western, and a
splash of vintage pop on the side. Hold the cheese, please. It is seasoned
with the essence of thousands of roadhouse bands and late night radio shows,
filtered through the highly tuned and gently warped perspective of four
longtime Chicago musicians.
It's a mix that contains a whole lot of our own originals, as well as tasty
selections from Motown, Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans. It celebrates
American favorites like the Band, the Meters, and Creedence Clearwater
Revival, as well as British artists like the Beatles, the Stones, and Van
Morrison. Stir in the conversations being carried on by neo-classic
songwriters like Alejandro Escovedo, Tom Petty, and Rodney Crowell, and
baste with homage to old masters such as Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Smokey
Robinson, and Bob Dylan.
the MoJoSkillet digs deep for "honest songs, essential songs, spare and
clear , sad and courageous ...possessed of a spirit of their own". Some of
the songs in the Skillet you will know by heart; others are unlike any
you've heard before. It's a full service menu, with specials added everyday.
